Our Rotary Club is proud to be part of Trees That Feed Foundation (TTFF)—a powerful, Rotary-connected initiative helping communities around the world grow long-term food security through tree planting. Since its beginnings, TTFF has donated over 400,000 trees globally, tailoring each project to the needs of the community—whether that’s breadfruit, mango, avocado, June plums, or other locally appropriate crops. Wherever there is a Rotary club and a need, TTFF works to get the right trees into the ground. What started as a small project in Jamaica has grown into a globally recognized program, supported by Rotary clubs, NGOs, corporations, and individual partners. TTFF’s impact spans continents—from Uganda, to Pakistan, where trees planted in southern regions are being cared for locally, to Abaco in the Bahamas, where Rotary-supported reforestation following Hurricane Dorian is now a major success story, with trees mature and bearing fruit just three years later. At the heart of our club’s involvement is Rotarian Cathy Henry, whose dedication, passion, and belief in this work continue to inspire action. Cathy has been a driving force in championing this initiative, helping our club live out Rotary’s commitment to sustainable solutions that nourish families, strengthen communities, and protect the planet. This is Rotary service at its best—rooted locally, growing globally. Learn more about Trees that Feed Foundation

Thorold, ON - The Rotary Club of St. Catharines South will host the first annual Alina Masud Memorial Indoor Walk-A-Thon on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 3:00–6:00 p.m. at Canada Games Park in Thorold, honouring the life and legacy of Alina Masud, a Brock University student remembered for her compassion and generosity. Organized by the Club’s International Committee, the fundraiser reflects Rotary’s long-standing commitment to addressing child malnutrition in Pakistan, Alina’s ancestral homeland. Funds raised will support the procurement of therapeutic food and essential micronutrients for children under five, as well as pregnant and lactating women - interventions that are proven to save lives when delivered on time. Through partnerships under the Trust for Malnutrition & Stunted Growth (TMSG), Rotary-led efforts have already supported treatment for tens of thousands of children and mothers. Registration for the walk is $10, and members of the public are encouraged to participate alongside family, friends, and workplace teams. By hosting this event, the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South aims to honour Alina Masud’s legacy by turning remembrance into meaningful, life-saving impact.

In November, President John and Youth Director Dan once again proudly presented a cheque for $3,200 to Eden Secondary School to help send 16 outstanding students to Montréal for the 2025 Secondary Schools United Nations Symposium (SSUNS). We’re thrilled to have supported these students in experiencing an inspiring weekend of debate, diplomacy, and global problem-solving alongside peers from across North America. SSUNS is known as one of the most diverse and impactful high-school conferences, offering students the chance to engage in meaningful discussions on some of the world’s most pressing geopolitical issues. Our club is proud to support opportunities that empower young people to lead, learn, and make a difference. Congratulations to the entire delegation on what we know was an unforgettable experience! Sometimes, the biggest impact starts with a single idea. In 2015, Rotarian Najeeb Syed shared a simple concept with Rotary International: “Every Rotarian should plant one tree.” Though the initiative didn’t launch immediately, it inspired the “One Tree, One Rotarian” movement that would later see millions of trees planted worldwide.

World Polio Day, held every year on October 24, is an opportunity for Rotary members to rally the world around the fight to eradicate the disease forever. Since 1988, we have seen a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9%. For more than three years, we've seen wild polio cases in only two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This year the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South will be joining the other Rotary Clubs of St. Catharines (Downtown an Lakeshore) in a flag raising ceremony taking place at the St. Catharines City Hall on Friday October 21st, 2022. Please join us in being part of this very important ceremony. More information will be posted here.

The tragic news of widespread flooding and death in Pakistan through out the news is heart wrenching. It always seems to be the struggling, poorer countries that are being hit- time and time again- with disaster after disaster. It is an incredible journey for this project- from recognizing malnutrition and treating babies , then to prenatal moms and now flood relief. An amazing story.

Water, the source of life, carries death and disease in much of the developing world. One in six people in the world have no access to safe drinking water. With help from Rotary sponsored water and sanitation projects, like the Haiti Water for Life Program, Rotarians have helped thousands of communities globally.
Providing Clean Water is one of Rotary International's Six Areas of Focus.
Did You Know?
One of the first large-scale global grant projects under the Rotary Foundation's Future Vision pilot is providing clean water to thousands in Sierra Leone.

Conversation: invitation to Rotary Club Niagara Falls Sunrise event
Dear fellow Rotarians,
The Rotary Club of Niagara Falls, Sunrise has a tradition of involving newer members in organizing a special event that is a social opportunity among Rotarians and a fund raising opportunity. We realize that each club has its own events that they hold or support, but on behalf of the “new members” we would like to invite you and your members to our event on March 9th, entitled A Premiere Murder. It is a murder mystery dinner and dance.
Here is how the evening unfolds: cocktails at 6:00, dinner at 7:00, (murder shortly thereafter), and dance at 9:00. During the cocktails the scene will be set and throughout the dinner the audience will help solve the murder. Once the culprit has been caught and taken away, you are free to enjoy the evening of fellowship and dancing.
We have created a Hollywood theme and are asking attendees to dress for the red carpet (cocktail attire). We are also asking attendees to come as their favorite Hollywood personality or character from a movie. Are there any Marilynn Monroe look-a-likes in your club? How about someone as debonair as Clark Gable?
This should be a fun evening. It is being held at the Grand Ballroom of the Stonemill Inn (Johnny Rocco’s, 271 Merritt Street, St. Catharines). It is an evening of interactive dinner theatre. Tickets are $75/person. A four course dinner is being served. Cash bar. Call Brian Kon for tickets 905-704-9806 or by email at brian.kon@HotelDieuShaverFoundation.com <mailto:brian.kon@HotelDieuShaverFoundation.com> .
A poster has been attached.

Kaila Raimondo seems like the average highschool student, she's 16 years old, in grade 11, born and raised in Niagara Falls and dreams of becoming an orthodotist. However, what her unique is that she has won many awards, ranging from Most Volunteer Hours in her school, Patriotism Awards and Acedemic Proficiency Awards to name a few. Kaila was our guest speaker today and spoke about the Free the Children program as well as her own intiate to raise money to build a school in Kenya through the Me to We Program.

August is Membership and Extension month, a time to focus on the heart of Rotary and what makes it great -- more than 1.2 million members in nearly 33,000 clubs worldwide.
On this topic Jacquie Herman-Wing, from the We Care Program gave us some excellent insight into what Rotarians do well, what we could do better and what we do best.

All of us in Rotary are looking to change the world, for why else would we be Rotarians. We believe that our world can be happier, healthier, and more peaceful. We believe that the future can and will be better than the past. We are idealists, and we bring our ideals to life through our Rotary service. - Sheila Bristo.

"Taxpayer affordability has been a theme throughout the 2006-2010 term of Council. We have managed the Region's finances prudently to keep tax increases low. Including the zero per cent tax increase that residents will be receiving this year in 2010, we have managed to hold our tax increases to an average of just over one per cent per year for the past five years - a significant achievement given ongoing financial pressures."

The Paul Harris Fellowship is named for Paul Harris who founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905.
The Fellowship was established in his honour in 1957 to express appreciation for a contribution US$1,000 to the humanitarian and educational programs of The Rotary Foundation. Those programs include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding. Foundation programs provide educational opportunities, food, potable water, health care, immunizations, and shelter for millions of persons. These activities are funded, implemented and managed by Rotarians and Rotary clubs around the globe.
Rotarians also designate a Paul Harris Fellow to recognize another person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission of the Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace.
As we move closer to a more peaceful world today, the following individuals become Paul Harris Fellows:
Tom Bailey Paul Monaghan
Roseanne Morissette
Bonnie Prentice Najeed Syed

Lest we forget...We pay tribute to the many Canadians who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live in a country free from tyranny and governed by freedom, democracy and justice.
From the battle of Vimy Ridge, to the beaches of Normandy, to the dusty roads of Afghanistan, these brave men and women put our country's welfare before their own and we owe them and their families a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.

You Are The Missing Piece. Membership Chair Sheila Bristo speaks on Rotary Membership Month.
By participating in local and international service projects, club members can volunteer their time and talents where they're most needed.
The Avenues of Service are Rotary's philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:
-
Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the club's effective functioning.
-
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.
-
Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
-
International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary's humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.
-
New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs.

"Every club should strive to achieve a balanced interaction between Rotarians and their families -- and the family of Rotary. Only by working together, as a family, can we ensure that the Rotary of today grows into an even stronger Rotary of tomorrow," says Kenny.

Shelia's classification is Courts Administration, as The Manager of Court Operations for
Niagara
and that means Shelia is the Sheriff of Niagara and she said she cannot get us out of jury duty. When Shelia accepted the position in April 2004 after working 18 years in the mental health sector people told her that accepting the position made her the Sheriff. Shelia said no, how could that be the subject since it did not come up in the interview. Then to her surprise it was confirmed that yes bottom line Shelia was the Sheriff of Niagara.

Ed Telenko decided to be our guest speaker as soon as he realized that April 16th was a regular meeting and he had not booked anyone.
Ed decided to take us on visual tour on the history and evolution of western art. The tour started with a collection of pictures that illustrated to us the richness and diversity, the art a computer can produce. The computer is no longer just a 'number cruncher' but a tool for artist that shows no limit.

Forgot where you put your wallet, the name of a person, ingredients in your favorite recipe. Walk in a room and forgot what you are there for. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
Tell yourself that you have a good memory and that it is improving every day. Focus on successes and actively navigate your mindset. Praise yourself for remembering, but never punish yourself for fogetting. A Recipe for a Healthy Brain.

Identity Theft: What it is and what you can do about it
Every year, thousands of people are victims of identity theft. Identity crime is the fastest growing crime in
North America
and all of us are potential victims. While recent developments in telecommunications and computer processing make it easier for companies and consumers to reach each other, they can also scatter your personal information more widely, making life easier for criminals.

It was appropriate that Ed Telenko spoke at our meeting on Monday of a great Rotarian who showed us the way to make someone welcome as a new member. He did not tell us the name of the quiet person of whom he spoke with such respect but most of us knew that person was Jack Bailey. It is with deep sadness that we learned of Jack's passing the very next day.
