ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dragonboat Race, July 24th, 2010 - Arie requested more members to join the fun and fill the boat.

District 7090 Picnic, July 25th 2010 at Queenston Heights 2-5 p.m.

Bingo, July 24th, volunteers needed by Don Beard. Sheila thanked Elizabeth, Roseanne, and Beth for assisting with bingo on July 9th.

Rib Fest, August 1st - Jason stated that the sign up sheet for the two 50/50 draws  would be circulated next week.

Canadian Tour Championship tickets are available from John Teibert, Ron Kozub, and John D"Ambrosio.

Group Study Exchange, Sept 20th- 24th Jim Hooper stated that we need one host family for the four nights.

Take it to Heart Gala November 13th - Cathy stated that the committee is looking for ads, sponsorships of the menu courses, and support from members. 
  
INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER, JEAN STEWART

Kris Akilie introduced Jean Stewart, who has vast knowledge and skills in Human  Resources, has created many new policies and procedures for Mainstrean, volunteers with Alzheimers Society, Gillians Place, United Way and Information Niagara where she currently sits on their Board. Jean worked with the MTO for many years and retired in 2007. Her services are now in high demand for not-for-profit organizations for short-term H.R. projects.

Jean has two children and two grandchildren. She is very active in OPSEU, holding both local and provincial elected positions.
 
Ron spoke of the responsibilities of being a Rotarian and the history of the organization Jean was presented with her membership information package, pin, and well wishes from the entire club by President John.
 
SHELTER BOX AWARD

Rose Smith spoke of the commitment and initiative of Zan Dominick in hosting "Music for Haiti," which raised money for Shelter Boxes to Haiti. a plaque was present to Zan on behalf of Shelter Box Canada.

EARLY LEAVERS

George Fitzpatrick expressed his regrets to President John and the guest speaker and took early leave.
 
INTRODUCTION OF GUEST SPEAKERS, ROSS CRUIKSHANK AND THIE CONVERY

Dan introduced Ross Cruikshank who then introduced Thie Convery from "Swim to End Polio".

Ross is a member of the Dundas Club who is sponsoring Thie Convery. Ross joined Rotary in North Bay in 1960. He worked as an engineer with Bell Canada for 36 years. He is Past President of the Rotary Club of Ottawa, Chairman of United Way campaign, YMCA/YWCA, Childrens Treatment Center, District Health Council, Carlton University Board of Governors, Carlton University Development Corporation, Past President of Rotary Club of Dundas 2004/2005, Past Chairman of St. Paul's United Church Board of Governors, Present Chairman of Promotions and Publicity Committee for STEP.

Ross spoke of the history of polio, his connection to the disease while growing up in Canada and the steps taken to eradicate the disease from the world - through Rotary International and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Ross then introduced Thie Convery who will be swimming across Lake Ontario on August 6th,7th to raise money to eradicate polio. Thie is a member of The Rotary Club of Dundas and has issued a challenge to one and all to sponsor her per mile across the lake. She spoke of the protocols, hazards and training etc., that is involved with the swim, which will begin at Niagara-on-the-Lake and will end at The Marilyn Bell Park in Toronto. Ross and Thie invited the club to join them at the kick-off party and also at the wrap-up party. Donations and pledges can be made on line at www.SwimToEndPolio.ca

Tom thanked Thie and Ross for speaking to the club and presented them with a token of our appreciation.
 
ATTENDANCE REPORT

Ron Kozub reported 22 members, nine make-ups, and eight guests for 90 per cent attendance.

ADJOURNMENT

As there was no further business for the good of Rotary, President John wished everyone a good week in Rotary and adjourned the meeting at 1:25 p.m.
