Doug Foss, International Director on Literacy, introduced Ms Kitty Cairns of the Canadian Federation of University Women Gift of Reading Program.

Ms Kitty Cairns explained how she started the Gift of Reading Program in her basement in 1996 because of the need that she saw for local school age children to own books.

How the Gift of Reading Program Works:

The school boards choose needy schools--usually one separate and two public schools are chosen. Agencies are also supported when a need is made known.

Agencies assisted by the Gift of Reading Program include Bethlehem Place, Brighter Futures, The Children's Discovery Centre, The Canadian Federation of University Women Reading Program, FACS, various French programs, The General Hospital Paediatric Ward, Niagara Centre for Youth Care, Niagara Child Development Centre, Women's Place, YWCA Residence, St. John's School, and the Multi-Cultural Centre.

Every child receives a new paperback book during the holiday season.

Every school library receives hundreds of new and used books (plus they often receive a cheque to purchase books).

Agencies receive reference books and used books.

Donations come from the club, individual members, friends, publishers, local businesses, etc.

All work is done by six to 15 volunteers, and expenses are usually less than $50. a year.

Number of Books Distributed:

In the last nine years, over 28,000 books have been distributed.

Kitty noted that, with Rotary's help, perhaps 5,000 books could be given out in 2005.

Acknowledgements:

Every school/agency sends out thank you letters to supporters.

The Canadian Federation of University Women thanks supporter by letter and through the local newspaper.

Two hundred and twenty-five members are informed through presentations and the Gift of Reading Program newsletter.

How the Gift of Reading Program Can Work with Rotary:

A financial donation would help in the purchase of books. Rotary could buy a specific book, such as a World Atlas or Dictionary, which could be stamped with the Rotary logo.
