1000 Survival Gardens Project
Sep. 27, 2022 12:00 p.m.
SpeakerLuke Vorstermans - Founder Roll a Hippo Foundation | Chair, Hippo Roller Project | Rotary Club of Gibsons, BC
The 1000 Survival Gardens Project aims to deliver 1000 Survival Garden Kits to 1000 women in rural South Africa. A Survival Garden Kit includes the tools and seedlings to start small homestead vegetable gardens.
As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries in Africa are also "on the brink of hunger pandemic" that could lead to multiple famines if immediate action isn't taken.
In many rural settlements in Southern Africa, women are the frontline workers. As the coronavirus upsets the familiar community routines, unemployment, business failures, school closures, and social isolation have become the new reality. .With little income and sparse government assistance, women are faced with providing food for their families by resorting to growing their own food. Oct. 05, 2022 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
As donors, our club members are invited to gather for a commemorative ceremony marking a colossal community achievement - the establishment of Partridge Park at the former Glen Ridge PS schoolyard: WHEN: Wednesday, October 5th, 4pm WHERE: The basketball court at the park There will be a short, informal ceremony, including an official unveiling of the donor board and new basketball court pedestal (in recognition of Bob Miller) and a few words of recognition thanking the many key contributors to the project. The event will proceed, rain or shine! And stick around after for a talk about the rink for this winter! Providing a ~12-week outdoor skating season has proven to be a true labour of love for our dedicated group of volunteers, now very thin in the ranks. Stick around after the ceremony to have a talk about the future for the outdoor rink and what is required for us to be able to reprise the program for another season. After we can all go and socialize at Cats Caboose.
