Additional Information: When one young life ends, Rotary helps hundreds begin again
Rotary often speaks about _Service Above Self_—but every now and then, a moment comes that turns those words into a clear, personal mission. Alina Masud was an 18-year-old Brock University student. Her roots were in Pakistan. She had the kind of life ahead of her that makes a community hopeful—education, dreams, friendships, and the quiet confidence of a young person still becoming who she will be. Then, in an instant, everything changed. Alina was taken from her family and her community in a tragic car accident on Highway 406. Her story could have ended in grief alone. Instead, her memory is being carried forward in a way Rotarians understand deeply: by turning sorrow into service, and remembrance into measurable impact That is why the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South—through its flagship humanitarian initiative, the Trust for Malnutrition & Stunted Growth (TMSG)—is organizing the _ Alina Masud Memorial – 1st Indoor Walk-A-Thon_ at Canada Games Park, Brock University. This is more than an event. It is a Rotary-sized response to a silent emergency. The Emergency most people never see Malnutrition doesn’t always look like what people imagine. Often, it hides behind words like “just weak” or “picky eater.” It hides in repeated infections, slow growth, poor focus in school, and exhausted mothers who are doing their best with too little. In Pakistan, countless mothers bring children under five to clinics when the child is already close to severe acute malnutrition—when the body is running out of reserves and survival becomes a medical race. The beautiful thing is: this is one of the most treatable crises on earth—when the right help arrives in time. TMSG-supported clinics use: • Therapeutic food (ready-to-us • Essential micronutrients to address _hidden hunger_—vitamin and mineral deficiencies that damage immunity, growth, cognition, and long-term potential
This is not theory. It’s practical, clinical, and urgent. And the most Rotary part of it is this: the solution is not complicated—it’s consistency. A steady supply of therapeutic food. A steady supply of essential micronutrients. A steady stream of people who refuse to look away. Why this Walk-A-Thon matters to Rotarians The Alina Masud Memorial Walk-A-Thon is designed to bring our community together for a simple purpose: raise funds that directly procure life-saving therapeutic food and supplements. The sponsor package states clearly: 100% of proceeds go directly to clinical programs—only life-saving impact. It also reminds us of something Rotarians appreciate: sometimes the most powerful entry point is the simplest one—participation. With a modest registration, a Rotarian doesn’t just attend an event; they place a tangible “yes” behind a child’s chance to recover. The event Rotary can rally around Alina Masud Memorial – 1st Indoor Walk-A-Thon Date: Saturday, January 24, 2026* Time: 3:00 – 6:00 PM Location: Canada Games Park, 2021 Canada Games Way, Thorold, ON What to expect: an unforgettable afternoon of giving, healthy activity, delicious food vouchers, and community fun A message to every Rotarian reading this If you have ever wondered what it looks like when Rotary takes a global crisis and makes it -local, personal, and solvable- this is it. When we walk indoors for three hours in Thorold, we are not “just walking.” We are helping ensure that—somewhere in Pakistan—a mother doesn’t have to hear, “We have nothing left to give your child.” We are ensuring a clinic can say instead: “Yes. We can start treatment today.” Please come with your club members. Bring your family. Invite another Rotarian from another club. Sponsor if you can. Encourage participation even if someone can’t walk—because awareness itself is a form of service when it leads to action.
